If that is you, how good would it be to feel happy, motivated, confident, calm or just generally good so you can get things done and have a great day?
What I would like to share with you today is a very simple way to change how you feel, in virtually an instant, so you can change how you experience your day and go get the results you want at anytime. It’s one of my students’ favourite techniques because it is so quick, easy and effective!
It is called anchoring and is a technique that will allow you to access a positive feeling, or state as we call it, e.g. totally motivated, at any time just by using a stimulus, e.g. touching your knuckle.
The technique is so quick and simple that you can easily try it by following these 4 steps:
1. Recall a past vivid experienceTake a moment now and remember a time when you were totally motivated e.g. a time when you were motivated to learn something, take up a new hobby, try a new type of food, motivated to go to a party, take a training course or go on a date! Pick a time when you felt highly motivated, make sure it is intense. Remember a specific time and as you remember that time now imagine in your mind floating down into your body and see what you saw, hear what you heard and really feel the feelings of being totally motivated.
Notice how that feels – are you feeling totally motivated? Did you notice how you could feel the feeling getting more intense as you got into your memory? Great! So you just changed how you felt, virtually in an instant, just by remembering a time when you felt totally motivated in the past.
2. Anchor the feeling using a specific stimulus
Repeat Step 1 and this time you can anchor that feeling so you can access that feeling again at anytime. You are going to anchor that feeling by using a stimulus, which will create a neurological link to that feeling. We are going to use touching your knuckle with your index finger.
This time as soon as you can feel that motivated feeling rising inside you take the index finger of your writing hand and apply some pressure to one of your knuckles on your other hand, make your other hand into a fist, it makes it easier. Take your finger off your knuckle when you can feel the feeling of motivation start to lessen or you have held your finger on for upto 5 -15 seconds whilst you felt the feeling of motivation rise and peak inside you.
3. Change your state
Now have a look around the room, check your watch, look at the weather, anything to make sure you get out of that feeling (we call this a break state) because now we are going to test you anchored it!
4. Evoke the state – test your anchor works!
Put your finger back on your knuckle with the same amount of pressure you used before and ask ‘How do I feel?’ You should be feeling motivated – it is as easy as that!
Now whenever you want to feel motivated you just press your knuckle and bam - you have that feeling! How great is that!
You can anchor any positive feeling that may be useful in the same way e.g.
And enjoy the results!
For an easy way to remember the 4 steps use the mnemonic RACE: Recall, Anchor, Change and Evoke!
What you just experienced was a basic anchor. It can be used just on its own or part of other anchoring techniques to help to you be in charge of your emotions and assist you in getting results.
Anchoring is just one of the powerful and effective techniques provided by NLP. We hope you found it useful and if you wish to know more about this technique and how it can help you please contact us by email or phone using the contact details below.
